We try people from the beginning, understand the environment around us. If we don't understand something, that worries us.
Pictures are the first means of choice, to pass on something understood. Language is a much more sophisticated concept, to express thoughts. You surely know the situation, to talk and feel with someone, not reaching the other one - even though you speak the same language. A picture makes spoken things visible. And can be questioned and checked so much more directly.
